Community Steps Up After NEA Withdraws Grant for Inclusive Youth Theatre Program
When the National Endowment for the Arts withdrew its grant funding for this year’s Penguin Project at La Crosse Community Theatre, we weren’t sure how we’d fill the gap.
But you were.
In just a few short weeks, individuals, families, and local businesses came together to support our young artists—and not only did you meet the need, you exceeded it.
This incredible wave of generosity means that this year’s Penguin Project production of The Big Bad Musical will go on as planned—and next year’s Penguin Project is already secured, too. Your gifts will fund costumes, sets, accessibility tools, sensory-friendly accommodations, and the mentorship that makes this program so powerful for our artists with developmental disabilities and special needs.
"The Penguin Project is more than a performance—it’s a celebration of possibility,” said Erik Vose, Executive Director of La Crosse Community Theatre. “We may have lost a grant, but what we gained was far more important: the clear, undeniable support of our community. While we’ll continue to welcome donations, the very best way to support the Penguins now is simple—come see the show."
